Free air cooling technology to be used in Teesside facility
26/11/2009
IT services firm EDS is taking advantage of new cooling technology in its Teesside data centre.
The company will use Flakt Woods 'free-air' cooling to help chill the atmosphere in its £30 million data centre near Billingham.
EDS will become the first centre in the UK to use the technology, which it hopes will save thousands of pounds each year on cooling.
The design of the centre allows for the direct cooling of IT equipment and plant rooms using the external cool air associated with the north-east, with estimates saying that it could save upwards of 40 per cent on energy costs compared to a typical data centre.
Sally Poynter, EDS data centre services lead, said: "We hope that making the industry aware of what we have achieved at Billingham will set a new standard for data centres around the world."
Experts have recently suggested that building data centres in Iceland could help firms save money on energy costs as the cold air can be used to cool, while geo-thermal technologies can be used to provide heat.
