Planning begins on UK's largest data centre
25/11/2009
Planning permission for the UK's largest data centre has been given the go-ahead with power sources set to include renewable energy.
Dumfries and Galloway Council has given the green light for Lockerbie Data Centres to start building the facility, which will cost in the region of £950 million.
James Cole, director of data centre designers Keysource, said that hubs such as these should use renewable energy but uptime power is a very prominent driver in the matter.
"Combined heat and power, localised gas generation and other types of technologies can be brought in to use as renewable sources for power at source," he added.
Mr Cole commented that renewable sources should also be reliable, while a discussion about such power sources should be held alongside conversations about data efficiency.
It is envisaged that the new Scottish data centre will provide over 3,000 jobs, with 50 IT operators needed to run the 250,000 sq m facility
